Making this Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie for the first time

The first time I tried this chocolate peanut butter smoothie was years ago when we first got married. I remember drinking two full glasses of it because it was so good and satisfying. I had never had such a tasty guilt free treat before, so maybe I was a little gluttonous.

Now I always share, well because three kids don’t often let you enjoy a treat alone. They always know something’s up!

I love serving this to my kids on a hot summer afternoon though. Or sometimes I make this for my husband and myself after the kids are in bed at night.

Every once and awhile I will serve this for breakfast and the kids think it’s the most amazing thing ever! “Wow! Mom let us have dessert for breakfast!”

Here’s a Secret…

I never measure when making this recipe. I’ve made it so many times that I just throw the ingredients into our Vitamix, blend and serve. I tested this recipe out though to try and find the best ingredient amounts for you all trying this recipe for the first time.

When I first started cooking, baking and making food from scratch, I hated when the ingredient amounts were general. Toss in a handful of this and a bit of that and season to taste didn’t give me much confidence to make that recipe.

Now that I’ve had years of experience, it is easy for me to just season a soup to taste or eyeball a smoothie recipe. If you aren’t at that point in your from scratch cooking journey don’t worry, someday you will get there too if you keep at it.

Ingredient Swaps

While I usually make this chocolate smoothie with the ingredients listed in the recipe, here are some alternatives to try if you have an allergy or are missing a certain ingredient.

Milk can be swapped out for a milk alternative like almond, oat, etc. We make our chocolate peanut butter smoothies with full fat raw milk straight from our family farmer. This is the way we like it the best because no milk beats farm fresh full fat raw milk.

Peanut Butter can be swapped out for an allergy friendly nut or seed butter. I’ve tried this with almond butter and have found it to not be quite as enjoyable, but I think a nut butter like hazelnut would be delicious. In fact, I think I might need to try that out now.

Cocoa Powder is easily interchangeable for the raw form, cacao powder. I often make our smoothies with cacao as opposed to cocoa because it’s usually what I have on hand.

Honey can be changed out for maple syrup or possibly another alternative sweetener. I happen to think honey and maple syrup are the best natural sweeteners out there though.

Although these swaps can change the taste a little bit, they will still deliver a tasty healthy cold treat.

Bonus Health Boosting Ingredients

This smoothies is pretty amazing as it is, but here are a few additional ingredients that will take this smoothie to the next level nutritionally.

Add a tablespoon of extra fat like coconut oil. Here’s an important thing to know; healthy fats don’t make you fat. They balance your blood sugar and keep you full longer. Our bodies need the right kind fat to work best.

Hydrolyzed collagen powder is great for your hair, nails and skin. I like Vital Protiens collagen powder but there are some other great ones out there too. Here’s an article on the benefits of collagen in your diet if you are interested in reading more.

Ingredients

3 ripe frozen bananas

2 cups cold full fat milk

2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter

2 tablespoons of cocoa powder

1 tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Optional – 4-6 ice cubes

Blend on high until just smooth. Blending too long will make the smoothie not as thick because the blending warms it up and makes it melt.

Serve immediately for best flavor and thickness.
